Environment On April 16, 2009, Patrick Laliberté, Environmental Advisor at the MRC des Collines-de-l’Outaouais, accepted the Federation of Canadian Municipalities’ (FCM) award for “Recognition of a Special Contribution in International Co-operation”. The award was presented by Robert Coulombe, Mayor of Maniwaki and President of the UMQ, who represented the FCM for this occasion. On December 26, 2004, Southeast Asia was devastated by the greatest Tsunami in living memory. The scale of the disaster and the losses experienced in this region prompted the FCM to orchestrate a reconstruction and restoration program which involved more than a hundred Canadian municipalities to help the Sri Lanka and Indonesian communities. The core of this municipal commitment was the involvement and the work of volunteers. Thus, since the summer of 2007, Mr. Laliberté has been providing important technical support to the Aceh Jaya government of the Indonesian Region, in order to improve the waste management services for its citizens. This initiative allowed the local government to better grasp the importance of waste management and to benefit from the knowledge of these experts in soliciting the public’s involvement. It also provided the necessary tools to improve and to raise awareness of the waste collection program through the financing provided for equipment as well as the community’s collective effort. In 2008, Mr. Laliberté organized the Aceh Jaya personnel training in regards to their new equipment. He worked with the community on a viable action plan to collect waste and improve hygiene. He also made recommendations to ensure the feasibility of the new programs and services in the Aceh Jaya Region. The MRC des Collines-de-l’Outaouais would like to recognize Mr. Laliberté’s efforts with respect to this project and to congratulate him for receiving this prestigious honour. -30- May 2009 Source : Communications department – 819-827-0516, ext. 2236
